Tax Manager or Sr. Tax Manager, CPA


Bartlett, Pringle & Wolf, LLP is currently searching for an enthusiastic and qualified professional to join our tax department at the level of Sr. Tax Manager in Santa Barbara, California

Expertise should include real estate tax, partnership, M&A, choice of entity, consolidated returns, estate NOL review, and multi-state tax issues. Responsible for handling complex tax matters, fostering client relationships and managing client engagements, providing guidance and direction to less experienced staff, and supporting the Firm’s vision through pursuing new business opportunities and/or identifying initiatives to increase productivity, efficiency, staff utilization or other.


Qualifications:

• 5+ years of increasingly complex tax experience gained within a public accounting firm, and 3 at Manager level.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA license required; Master’s degree in Taxation a plus

• Proficient in corporate, individual, real estate and partnership taxation.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Presentation skills and strong organizational techniques are required

• Highly motivated

• Capable of managing multiple client engagements in addition to completing tasks related to business development

• Able to attain visibility and recognition within your industry specialization and in your local market

• Thrives in a culture of work hard and play hard

JOB DESCRIPTION




ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


1. Reviews complex tax returns on a regular basis; ensures tax rules applied to client situation achieve the most advantageous tax results

2. Performs cold review of tax returns

3. Prepares tax returns only in atypical circumstances

4. Occasionally researches complex tax issues, but generally delegates such work

5. Reviews and verifies tax research

6. Responds to or provides guidance to staff on complex IRS notices; may prepare communication to Taxpayer regarding compliance-related issues

7. Represents clients at IRS office audits


8. Identifies tax planning ideas; may prepare or review written client communication stating recommendations

9. Identifies and/or resolves ethical, independence and/or conflict issues

10. Strong understanding and working knowledge of various tax programs and of requisite software and internal work flow/procedures

11. Identifies, recommends, and/or implements business processes that increase efficiency, productivity, or other. Reinforces established business processes through own actions

12. Maintains confidentiality in all client matters

13. Strong familiarity with IRS Circular 230 Regulations Governing the Practice of Attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, Actuaries and Enrolled Agents Before the IRS and the AICPA Professional Code of Conduct


Client Service/Relationship


14. Frequent contact with client during the engagement including regular verbal and written correspondence and in-person meetings; initiates regular contact with client or client executives to strengthen business relationship; may initiate contact with client outside of the regular engagement

15. Demonstrates an understanding of the client’s business and has the confidence of the client as a trusted advisor

16. Anticipates and identifies client issues and concerns; provides advice and recommendations that reflect a thorough understanding of client’s situation, objectives, and/or strategy

17. Maintains full client responsibility including billing and collection efforts

Service Quality


18. Defines and delivers client service in accordance with established service practices and standards

19. Ensures staff follows established service practices and meets service quality standards in order to meet or exceed client expectations

20. Easily and accurately anticipates client needs or engagement issues and identify appropriate solutions

21. Demonstrates advanced technical knowledge and ability in recognizing work quality issues

22. Produces quality work products in accordance with taxing authorities, GAAP, and firm policies and procedures


MANAGEMENT


Staff


23. Acts as a mentor and coach in providing job-related guidance and direction to assigned staff

24. Manages staff workload to ensure maximum productivity and utilization and to ensure workload is balanced among team members

25. Monitors employee performance, addresses performance issues, provides guidance as to needed corrective action and monitors progress; takes the time to acknowledge employee accomplishments and communicate performance issues; meets with assigned staff on a regular basis to ensure open communication channels

26. Prepares annual performance evaluations and conducts evaluation meetings; actively participates in determining appropriate personnel action including recommendations to hire, discipline, promote, or reward staff

27. Identifies and resolves actual or potential personnel or workplace issues

28. Ensures staff complies with Firm policies and procedures; partners with Human Resources, as needed or appropriate

29. Assists employees in establishing a career development plan; ensures employees regularly set and achieve performance goals

30. Motivates staff

31. Monitors staff actual vs. budget hours; initiates corrective action, as needed

32. Trains staff (as needed)


Engagement


33. Manages client engagements through project lifecycle according to established deadlines and project budget (hours)

34. Establishes engagement expectations and budget, managing engagement budget and engagement staff and initiating corrective action (as needed), performing technical and/or non-technical review (as needed or requested), and leveraging staff resources to maximize engagement profitability and to ensure timeliness, quality efficiency of client engagement

35. Educates engagement team on issues affecting client and/or the engagement; communicates changes to engagement plan (if any)


Business Development


36. Demonstrates a deep understanding of the firm’s products, service models, position in the marketplace, vision and core values

37. Recognizes and/or pursues new business opportunities, cultivates referrals from existing clients, and appropriately cross-sell existing clients

38. Has an established network of business contacts and centers of influence through which new business is referred

39. Mentors others in business development efforts
