We are currently seeking talented Lead Bank Tax Advisor for our San Antonio, TX facility.

Purpose of Job:

The Lead Tax Advisor is responsible for identifying, mitigating and complying with complex direct federal tax matters relating to the company and its affiliate financial services operations, including insurance, banking and investments. This role oversees aspects for federal taxation including federal tax research/planning and advisory with an emphasis on federal tax compliance and will partner with senior leadership on tax planning and strategy. In addition, this role will lead and be directly involved with U.S. corporate federal tax return compliance processes, the federal tax planning process and the implementation of tax planning strategies, including making recommendations to executive management regarding tax saving opportunities and risk mitigation strategies.

Job Duties:

  • Proactively engages in significant company transactions to identify and communicate areas of tax opportunity and tax risk to key stakeholders across the enterprise. Ensures that tax reporting processes anticipate and change with material corporate transactions and reorganizations.
  • Collaborates with internal legal counsel external tax consultants to secure knowledge of key tax aspects related to operations and various activities and transactions.
  • Partners with senior leaders to provide input into the federal tax planning process and implementation of tax planning strategies.
  • Provides direct tax advisory services to various USAA financial service operating entities and functions. Supports the tax team with respect to all federal tax compliance and planning issues.
  • Develops federal tax reporting positions and communicates to both senior tax department management and external auditors.
  • Develops and maintains efficient tax compliance processes and builds and maintains relationships with internal finance and operating teams, ensuring effective communication on tax, finance and business issues.
  • Participates in federal tax exams for timely response to IRS document requests and tax exam filings, coordinating with the Director of Tax Exams on related responses.
  • Leads and guides the federal tax compliance reporting process to increase the accuracy and efficiency of federal tax return reporting and drives the timely preparation of regulatory financial statement filings.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal tax developments and legislative matters that might impact the company or its members.
  • Mentors staff in federal technical issues and career development.
  • Performs all other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifciations

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Masters in Taxation or JD/LL.M.
  • Eight years overall related experience, with at least six years in Federal tax planning, tax compliance and tax accounting responsibilities in a public accounting or corporate tax department.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. corporate income tax law, tax reporting and filing requirements, including consolidated tax return issues
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 740 and solid understanding of tax law sufficient to enable proper tax accounting and reporting decisions
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and proven track record of partnering in team settings
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Strong problem solving abilities
  • Ability to effectively work with both internal and external partners


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar business concentration.
  • Eight to ten years of overall experience with a Big Four public accounting firm and/or corporate tax department
  • Experience in the banking, insurance or financial services industry
  • Experience imparting tax knowledge to executive officers and independent auditors, business leaders, peers and subordinates
