TRAFIGURA is currently seeking an Indirect Tax Advisor to fulfill a core position in its Tax team. This position will be groomed to take on greater responsibility within the Tax function and will join a fast-paced, collegial work group whose goal is to build effective processes and controls.

Focus of Role: The focus of this role is on indirect tax planning and advisory for North America and the Caribbean. Primary duties are to advise the businesses on indirect tax implications of commodities trades, and to develop and implement tools and procedures that streamline tax processes, ensure data integrity, and mitigate tax risk in trading activities. This role will also handle audit defense and tax recovery projects for sales and use, fuel excise, severance, environmental and property taxes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform tax research and advise the business on the indirect tax implications of commodity transactions and other business proposals in North America and the Caribbean
  • Ensure that state and local tax compliance processes are documented and in practice
  • Understand the data elements that affect state and local taxes, and advise tax preparers on sales and use, fuel excise, severance, environmental, property, state income and franchise taxes and related exemptions
  • Develop diagnostic reports and design controls to address key tax risks
  • Manage audits, appeals and cost recoveries
  • Review state income tax returns, prepare state apportionment and support related state planning efforts
  • Other projects and duties as may be assigned from time to time

Reporting Structure:

  • Reporting directly to Regional Head of Indirect Tax



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA or JD a plus
  • Minimum 5 years experience in multi-state indirect tax, energy industry experience is a plus
  • Ability to speak and write Spanish is a plus
  • Capacity to grow into US state income tax area
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to effect tax process enhancements
  • Ability to deliver measurable tax improvements and tax cost recoveries
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
